FINALS DAY

Great waves, excellent surfing and a masterful performance from protagonist Tyler Wright (Lennox Head, NSW) highlighted the final day of All Girls Surf Showdown.

Held at Lennox Head, the prestigious event, in it’s 17th year, saw some of the finest female surfing talent in the country descending upon the Far North Coast jewel.

The action that transpired didn’t disappoint as competitors in Open Pro, Junior Pro, Longboard Pro, Over 28, Over 40, Under 16 and under 14 division’s blew the collective minds of spectators and surfing purists.

Led by the dynamic and radical Wright, who won both the Open and Junior Pro divisions, the standard was through the roof as current, former and future professional starlets lined up for excellent prize money.

“I’m so happy to take out both division’s in such a prestigious event,” the 15-year-old said graciously after annihilating the competition and taking home $1500 for her troubles.

“It’s my first time competing here so I’m stoked.”

For Wright, who has the most incredible competitive record of any current junior surfer, today’s success was a surprise, considering the high standard and talent on hand.

“Just to compete alongside the likes of Dimity (Stoyle), Laura (Enever), Kirby (Wright), Phillipa (Anderson) in the Open Pro and Sarah (Mason) and Nikki van Dijk in the Junior event is awesome, but to have taken out each division is amazing.”

As the current International Surfing Association (ISA) Junior World Champion, Australian Junior Champion and reigning champion of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event - The Beachley Classic – Wright sees the importance of event’s like the All Girls Showdown.

“The quality and level of surfing shown here this weekend is extreme,” Wright added.

Having seen the likes of dual ASP World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Kingscliff, NSW), former ASP World Champion Pauline Menczer (Byron Bay, NSW), 2008 ASP World Qualifying Series Champion Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW) and current Australian Open Women’s champion Jenny Boggis (Lennox Head, NSW) take the prestigious crown, Wright now finds herself at the vanguard of women’s surfing.

“This proves to all that the standard of female surfing in Australia, and internationally, is rising – I’m just happy to be at the forefront; it’s really exciting.”

As the 17th annual All Girl Surf Showdown, event director’s Kelly O’Brien and Max Perot could not have been happier, or impressed, with what took place over the weekend – seeing a marked rise in the standard of competition.

“The event featured surfer’s from all states around the country and this year we definitely saw the youngest and best crop of girls competing for some time,” O’Brien stated.

“The fact that we held an over 40’s division is a testament to the strength and depth of Australian female surfing,” she added.

The All Girl Surf Showdown is proudly supported by Southern Cross Credit Union, Southern Cross Ten, The Northern Star, Lennox Point Hotel, Hive Swimwear, Freeform Board and the All Girls Surfriders Club.
